Some of the girls living together at an Iranian “Correctional and Rehabilitation Centre” have committed serious crimes: drug dealing, assault, murder. From the seclusion of their prison evolves a fragile feeling of safety in which they exchange the traumatic stories that have brought them here. Often these stories are surprisingly similar to each other. Far away from their families the girls’ prison becomes a protected space for friendship and fun emerges.
Director Mehrhad Oskousei has waited seven years for the permission to shoot his documentary. With great empathy he creates an astonishing intimacy for his protagonists. In its simplicity, the film develops a great emotional force and provides an unusual view on modern Iran.
