Oscar nominated thriller by Taxi-Driver-author Paul Schrader with star cast

Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a wreck, tortured by physical suffering, alcohol and traumatic memories. Since the death of his son and the failure of his marriage, the former military pastor has led more tourists than parishioners through his small church in the state of New York. Toller’s faith is additionally challenged when pregnant Mary (Amanda Seyfried) asks him for help. Her husband, a radical environmentalist, has doubts about bringing a child into this world – so close to the apocalypse. To his question “Can god forgive us for what we’ve done to this world?”, even Toller knows no answer. Even before the conversation can be continued at a second meeting, the situation worsens when Mary finds an explosive vest in the garage.

The directorial work of the well-known screenwriter Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver) is a cinematic excess. In static, claustrophobic images he develops an intoxicating pull and once again proves himself to be a dark chronicler of American society.
